24 September is Heritage Day in South Africa. IZIKO museums put up an exhibition for the entire week prior to Saturday the 24th, ending the festivities on Sunday 25 September. There were displays to inform the public of our rich heritage and to create awareness about our diverse cultural backgrounds. The Cape Guild of Weavers took part in these celebrations. We held demonstrations of spinning, weaving and felting, put finished works on display and answered questions by the public.

Children were asked if they would like to weave in a strip of cloth on which they had written a message about South Africa and how they would keep our country beautiful. Lots of I LOVE SOUTH AFRICA's,  I WILL KEEP MY COUNTRY CLEAN and I WILL PLANT TREES were eagerly woven into the ever-growing Heritage Banner

The Guild received much-needed exposure, and there were many interested people, staring in amazement as spinners sat peacefully turning the wheel and producing long threads of soft yarn, weavers throwing the shuttle across the warp, patiently watching their creation grow on the loom and felters from Nuno Felt creating beautiful items by repeatedly stabbing the felt needle into the felting wool. All in all a very successful week.

On the 24th of June 2010 the Guild turned 60. We decided to hold a fashion show rather than have an exhibition to spoil ourselves and show off the accomplishments, hard work and creativity of our members.

Family, friends and VIP's were invited to share in this auspicious occasion. Some of the VIP's included Bertha Serritslev and Evelyn Dunt, Norma Ordman, Jennifer Pauw and Greta Nielsen, all honorary members of the Guild. Mind you, Jennifer and Greta were not allowed to relax until after the fashion show, since both were serving members and had duties to perform.
